Ways to Keep Your Spectacles Clean to Increase Their Life

Are you tired of cleaning your glasses three times a day and want to know how to clean spectacles effectively? Then you’re at the right place.
Your relationship with your glasses is similar to any other: you must love and care for them for it to last. Therefore, cleaning your glasses should be a daily occurrence. While we tend to clean them with whatever is available, some habits may not be as beneficial as we believe. Here’s a four-step guide on how to clean spectacles.

Step 1. Wash Your Hands

Remember what your parents used to say to you just before dinner? Make them proud by beginning your cleaning routine by washing your hands! Use cool or warm water with a small amount of liquid or mild soap. Make sure the water in the faucet is lukewarm; hot water can damage the coating or warp the lenses. It’s too hot if you wouldn’t bathe a newborn in it!

Step 2. Rinse Your Glasses with Water

While you’re rinsing your hands, take your glasses and rinse them under a gentle stream of water. Next, apply a small amount of mild soap to the front and back of each lens. Rub both sides of your lenses for a minute and clean the frame as well; don’t forget the nose pad! The inside (nasal) edge of the eyeglass lenses, where they meet the frame’s bridge, is a hotspot for sweat and oil accumulation. Make sure to pay special attention to this area.
Also, note that:
Metal frames with nose pads require extra care on the nose pad arms as well as the pads themselves.
• For plastic frames without nose pads, make sure to clean the portion of the bridge that comes into contact with your nose to remove any built-up oil or sweat.
• Anti-fog lenses should be wiped daily (only with your microfiber glasses cloth) and cleaned weekly to keep them working properly. Avoid cleaning with soap and soaking or rinsing your anti-fog lenses in running water. Otherwise, their efficiency will suffer.

Step 3. Using a Clean Cloth, Dry Your Glasses

Pat dry the lenses and frame to remove the majority of the water. Use a dedicated microfiber cloth or a clean, fresh out–of–the–dryer cotton towel that hasn’t been exposed to fabric softener or dryer sheets. You want to make sure there is no debris on your lenses that could scratch them.

Step 4. Clean Your Lenses

After patting the lenses dry, finish cleaning with a microfiber cloth and a little moisture from a commercially available lens cleaner labeled “safe for coated lenses” or simply breathe softly into each lens. When cleaning the lenses, make sure they aren’t completely dry to avoid dragging dirt or debris across the surface.

Some Other Tips on How to Clean Specs:

 Keep anti-fog lenses away from soap, running water, and harsh chemicals like acetone.
 When you’re not wearing your glasses, keep them in their case. The majority of the dirt on your glasses is caused by wearing them on your head!
 Nothing containing alcohol should be used. It may not only damage the lenses, but it may also weaken some types of frames.
 It’s time to replace your nose pads when they turn yellow. The majority of nose pads are universal and can be purchased at any optical center.
