Find Your Fit

You’re standing in the middle of the store, trying to decide on a pair of pants to buy. Should you go for tapered jeans or straight-leg ones? The high-waist pair or the hip-huggers? Before heading to the fitting room, you put them against yourself to see if they will fit. The length seems right but what about the waist? You take a few pairs to the fitting room anyway to try on before you buy them.

Finding the right fit with your spectacles or sunglasses is equally important. While most people choose the trendiest pair of eyeglasses that suit their go-to style, one should try on the new pair of frames or sunglasses and make sure it fits your face before making a purchase. Just as wrong-sized pants may slip down your hips or roll under your feet when you walk, badly-fitted glasses may slide down your nose or sit awkwardly on your ears. It’s not only uncomfortable, but it can also cause eyestrain and headaches.

The Right Numbers

A simple way to avoid buying the wrong pair of glasses is to measure them against your face. Just as you would look at clothing tags for their sizes—whether you’re buying them online or in-store—look on the inside of the frame’s temples where you will see a series of numbers that look something like this – 50/19/135. The first number is simply the horizontal width of the lens and usually ranges from 40 mm to 60 mm. The second number tells you the distance between the lenses, ranging from 14 mm to 24 mm, and is the distance between the two lenses. The length of each temple is the last number measured from the end piece to the tip. This length falls between 120 mm to 150 mm. Women’s glasses are smaller-sized than men’s and the measurements reflect that. If you’re ordering glasses from the Titan Eye Plus website, each listed pair will carry this information in the product information grid.

The Right Fit

Now that you’ve got the know-how, there are a few ways to get well-fitted frames. The easiest way is to check an existing pair of eyeglasses you want to replace. If the measurements aren’t printed on them, you can use a cloth tape or ruler to make note of them. Now, measure the width of your eyes (for horizontal width), the distance between lenses, and the distance between your ears and eyes (for temple length). The closer the two set of numbers, the better the fit of your glasses.

Mirror, Mirror

If you don’t already own a pair of eyeglasses, get out your credit or debit card—yes, you read that right! Just stand in front of a mirror and place the width of a bank card on the centre of your nose while the other end touches the corner of your eye. If the card extends beyond the corner, you’re likely to need small frames. If it is the same width, medium frames are the way to go. If the card is smaller than your eye, large frames would be right for you. While medium-sized frames fit most people’s faces, it’s better to use your actual measurements when buying glasses. Alternatively, you can walk into any Titan Eye Plus store where our certified eyewear consultants will help you choose a pair that fits just right.
